Fibromyalgia

By: Dr. Alan Rosenthal

People suffering with fibromyalgia often find themselves asking a multitude of questions as to why they experience such high levels of pain so often. One question may be: Is there any evidence suggesting that fibromyalgia can be caused by exposure to environmental toxins including molds, asbestos, fiberglass and other airborne toxins?

Causes and Triggers

The truth is that fibromyalgia is a syndrome that combines pain, fatigue, anxiety, and depression. You have to separate “cause” from “trigger.” New research suggests that this syndrome is caused by imbalances of chemicals and hormones within the nervous system that amplify sensation, making even a slight touch feel painful.

Nerve Reactions

Daniel Clauw M.D., a rheumatologist at the University of Michigan, recently used MRIs to show what happens in the brains of fibromyalgia patients in response to minimal pressure to their left thumbs. He showed that to get the same brain response from healthy people you have to apply twice the pressure, showing that fibromyalgia patients are much more sensitive to touch.

Nerve Interference

In other studies, nerve interference from vertebral subluxations allow nerves to be hypersensitive and alter chemical and hormone levels within the nervous system, even though the subluxation itself is something a person is incapable of feeling.

Subluxation Triggers

Subluxations are created by traumas that occurred early in life and will relapse later in life when a person is exposed to a “trigger.” The trigger can be something chemical (found in nature) like molds or other airborne toxins, it can be an emotional stress, or a physical stress that sets off the negative health effects of the subluxations.

Chiropractic adjustments reduce the sensitivity found in fibromyalgia patients and allow them to live a better quality of life with less pain and increased function.
